In Madeira, gastronomy excels in both the traditional and the contemporary, in a constructive subtlety between the various high quality regional products, which allow for the elaboration of a varied menu of gastronomic specialties ranging from regional cuisine to international cuisine and even gourmet.
In the middle of the Atlantic, the archipelago's fish and shellfish are tasty and cooked with tradition, such as black scabbard fish fillets or tuna steaks, accompanied by crunchy fried corn. Or the octopus and delicious seafood, starting with limpets, snails and many others.
When it comes to meat, the most traditional dish is the famous beef kebab on a laurel stick, which gives it an unmistakable flavor. Also popular are the homemade couscous, the wheat soup and the vina-d'alhos meat.
A place with an exceptional climate, Madeira is home to a wide variety of crops, including sugar cane and tropical fruits (from the popular banana to pineapple, avocado pear, custard apple, mango and passion fruit), which are used in drinks and delicate desserts.
The famous Madeira wine, whose best-known grape varieties are Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, Malvasia, Terrantez and Tinta Negra, can be enjoyed as an aperitif or digestive, as well as with other delicacies, especially the traditional honey cake (made from sugar cane honey). Sugar cane is also used to make Madeira Rum, also known as sugar cane brandy, and the famous Poncha, made with honey and lemon, which you should try when you go up to Pico do Areeiro.
The bolo do caco is not to be missed. However, this is not a cake, but a loaf of bread baked on a piece of tile, which usually accompanies the kebab with garlic butter. Madeira also makes bread with sweet potatoes: the delicious sweet potato rosquilhas. Queijadas and fennel sweets are also very popular.
Come and enjoy the Madeiran delicacies that are sure to make your stay unforgettable. Combine the pleasure of socializing with the pleasure of tasting!

Located in the south of the island of Madeira and about 24 km from Funchal, this pretty village is another destination to consider when visiting the archipelago! Here you can explore the streets by the sea, admire the interior of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz and, a little further away, the beautiful Palacete do Lugar de Baixo, also known as Palacete dos Zinos, which was transformed into a boutique hotel at the beginning of 2020. When you leave Ponta do Sol, don't hesitate to take the old road (ER101) that connects Ponta do Sol to Madalena do Mar to pass under the beautiful Anjos waterfall and discover the old tunnels that will give you the impression of entering a cave.

After arriving at Ponta do Pargo, you'll have the opportunity to take a short trail that will lead you to the magnificent Garganta Funda waterfall. When you reach the viewpoint, you'll be dazzled by what you see. You'll see the waterfall from an incredible height, surrounded by the cliffs and close to the Atlantic Ocean.
It is the largest plateau on the island and stands at an altitude of around 1500 meters. In addition to its size, this place stands out because it is where much of the island's wind energy is captured. On the other hand, as this is a plateau situated at a high altitude, rainwater is easily absorbed by the soil, helping to maintain the underground water tables.
When you visit Paúl da Serra, take the opportunity to visit the Bica da Cana viewpoint, which offers a breathtaking view! You may be lucky enough to enjoy a sea of clouds or a view over the valley. Each visit to this place will differ, but all are unforgettable! Located between the Paúl da Serra plateau and the Ribeira da Janela, the Fanal forest is undoubtedly one of the most photogenic places on Madeira Island!

It is located at the top of the parish of Ribeira da Janela, next to the road. From this viewpoint you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the entire north coast of Madeira Island, including Seixal, São Vicente and Ponta Delgada. Enjoy the view by sitting on the swing at your disposal, and don't leave without taking some beautiful photos.
It's a small town located in the northwest of the island, famous for its natural volcanic pools, which are very popular with tourists. After a swim, don't hesitate to visit the Fort of São João Batista (1730), which currently houses the small Madeira Aquarium.
Just 10 km from the town of Porto Moniz is Porto do Seixal beach, one of Madeira's most popular beaches. Its particularity is that it is one of the only beaches on the island with natural sand. The landscape is beautiful, with green mountains, and the black sand is typical of the volcanic islands. The combination of the two gives the place a lot of character and a wild side
It's a small village at the bottom of several mountains with the particularity of having been isolated until 1959, when the first road was built to connect the village to the rest of the island.
When you raise your head, you'll appreciate the view and feel like an ant when you see the impressive volcanic mountains. Info: Don't forget to try the local specialties: sour cherry and chestnut soup. You can also admire Curral das Freiras from the Eira do Serrado viewpoint, which offers a breathtaking view of this unique place and the 6 surrounding mountains.

As well as visiting the streets of the town center, I invite you to visit the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Fátima to enjoy the beautiful view over the municipality and visit the main attraction: the São Vicente caves.
The São Vicente caves are the result of a volcanic eruption that took place over 890,000 years ago in Paúl da Serra.
They are formed by lava tubes created by the low temperatures, which allowed the outside to solidify, while inside the lava continued to circulate, thus forming a series of tubes. During your visit, you will be able to visit a 700-meter path where you will see various parts of these lava tubes.
After visiting the caves (30 minutes), you can visit the volcanic center where they will explain how volcanic eruptions are formed and how the beautiful island of Madeira was created.
These caves are not the most spectacular in Portugal, but they are definitely worth a visit.

The town of Santana has some interesting sights, but it is undoubtedly the typical houses with thatched roofs that delight visitors.
Unfortunately, you won't find many of these houses. You can find some next to the Town Hall and in the Madeira Theme Park.
In addition to the typical houses, you'll find three multimedia pavilions in the Madeira Theme Park where you can discover more about the island's history in a captivating way, making this an ideal destination for families. You should also know that the entire municipality of Santana has been classified by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve due to its natural wealth, in which the Laurissilva forest stands out, where several endemic species of the island's fauna and flora predominate.
It is also here that Madeira's highest peaks are found: Pico Ruivo, Pico das Torres and Pico do Areeiro.

At 1862 meters, it is the highest point on the island of Madeira and the third highest peak in Portugal (after Ponta do Pico, in the Azores, and Torre, in Serra da Estrela). To get to Pico Ruivo you'll have to take a walking route. I advise you to choose the trail from Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo (2.8 km).
This trail will enchant you with its beauty and the feeling of touching the clouds. Although this trail is accessible to anyone, you'll have to climb about 300 meters between the starting point (Achada do Teixeira) and Pico Ruivo, which will take an average of an hour and a half. Don't hesitate to stop several times to take some photos of this wonderful trail.

It's a different place from the rest of the island. You'll find a long, wild peninsula with shallow vegetation, where trees are practically non-existent (there are only a few palm trees). A beautiful 8 km (round trip) trail will take you past the stunning Ponta de São Lourenço.
It's a different place from the rest of the island. You'll find a long, wild peninsula with shallow vegetation, where trees are practically non-existent (there are only a few palm trees). A beautiful 8 km (round trip) trail will take you past the stunning Ponta de São Lourenço.
