Madeira reached record figures in 2023, surpassing historic marks in terms of visitors and revenue. In August of that year, tourism revenue reached 75 million euros, representing a 50% increase compared to August 2022, which had been the best month so far. For 2024, a 4% increase in available seat capacity is planned, as announced by Madeira's Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture, Eduardo Jesus.

 

 

This announcement was made this Thursday during an event at the Madeira Tourism Information Office in Lisbon, held on the sidelines of the Lisbon Tourism Exchange (BTL), which was held at FIL until March 3. In 2023, 52 airlines operated to Madeira, but Eduardo Jesus believes that it may be possible to exceed this figure in 2024.

 

 

The responsible emphasized the consolidation of demand, especially in the domestic market, and expressed the prospect that 2024 would be a year of consolidation for Madeira's tourist destination. "The outlook I have is not one of great growth, because you can't and shouldn't grow too much on top of these figures. Above all, we want to enhance the destination."

 

 

In 2023, Madeira recorded 10.9 million overnight stays, an increase of 13% on the previous year and 35% on 2019. In addition, the golf sector had its best year ever, with an increase of around 8% in the number of rounds and a 22% increase in revenue generated. Cruises also made a significant contribution to the sector, with 279 ships and 615,000 people visiting the region by sea.

 

 

The data revealed that tourists arriving by cruise spend around 100 euros a day, while those arriving by plane spend an average of 150 euros a day.

 

 

The top five markets in 2023 were English, German, Portuguese, French and Polish, with special emphasis on the Polish market, which showed significant growth potential. For 2024, growth in this market of around 20/30% is expected, driven by greater accessibility and collaborations between Polish and Hungarian operators
